Why is Fiber Important?

Did you know that a high fiber diet appears to reduce the risk of developing various physical conditions that can alter our bodies? Some of these include heart disease, diabetes, constipation, diverticular disease and even colon cancer. Fiber is also important for the digestive system and for the lowering of cholesterol.

So, if this is so important, you need to know what fiber is, right? Dietary fiber is a material from plant cells that cannot be broken down by enzymes in the human digestive tract. The two important types of fiber are water-soluble and water-insoluble. Each of these have their own characteristics and different properties. Without going into great detail, water-soluble fibers absorb water during digestion while water-insoluble fibers remain unchanged during digestion.

If you are wondering what kinds of foods contain these two fibers, well I will share some with you now. Soluble fiber foods would include fruits such as apples, oranges and grapefruits, vegetables, legumes (such as dry beans, lentils and peas), barley, oats and oat bran. Insoluble fiber can be found in fruits with edible peel or seeds, vegetables, whole grain products (such as whole-grained bread, pasta and crackers), bulgur wheat, stone grounded corn meal, cereals, bran, rolled oats, buckwheat and brown rice. Whoooo!

Total dietary fiber intake should be 25 to 30 grams a day from food, not supplements. Currently, dietary fiber intakes among adults in the United States average about 15 grams a day. That's about half the recommended amount.

Are you getting your daily dose of fiber? Did you know in order to get just 12 grams of dietary fiber, 48% daily value, you would have to eat 7 slices of whole wheat bread, 5 cups of broccoli and 79 almonds. All of these items consist of a total of 1198 calories. You could drink a 6 oz orange fiber drink which will deliver 12 of the 25-30 grams needed daily and it is only 60 calories. It also helps promote total digestive health, promotes healthy weight loss and helps lower cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease and it is also gluten free. Image that!

Here's to your health!
